Oncology

Sanofi’s mission is to create solutions for currently unmet medical needs. Sanofi employ innovative approaches to attack cancer on all fronts and provide medicines adapted to the diverse profiles of patients.

Cancer is a disease of the cell. It develops when cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. This can happen when DNA is damaged and not repaired. People can inherit damaged DNA or a person’s DNA can become damaged by environmental factors, such as smoking. Although there are many kinds of cancer, they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Cancer cells can form a tissue mass commonly referred to as a tumor. Metastasis occurs when cancer cells move via the bloodstream or lymph vessels to other parts of the body and begin to grow and replace normal tissue. Not all tumors are cancerous. Benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body (metastasize) and is rarely life threatening.
Each cancer is different. There are several types at various stages of development. Each one therefore requires an appropriate treatment.

Cancer concerns all of us

In 2000, more than 10 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed and 6 million people died from cancer worldwide*. In industrialized countries, the elderly are not the only victims: cancer is the leading cause of death in people under the age of 65. Lung, colon and gastric cancers are among the five most common cancers worldwide, with breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. Cancer is continuing to grow at an alarming rate all over the world. However, therapeutic progress, prevention by more healthy lifestyle and detection should finally help reduce the number of death from certain cancers.

Sanofi approaches to treat cancer

Make anticancer drugs available for the medical community allowing the patients to benefit from important therapeutic advance.
A better understanding of the cancer process has led to the identification of many new targets that regulate the growth, survival, invasion, and spread of cancer cells. Sanofi is committed to the development of cancer agents that selectively target one or more processes which lead to cancer, such as overexpression of proteins that prevent cancer cell death, waning tumor immune response and tumor vascularization. Sanofi is a very best in the field of oncology, particularly in chemotherapy, with following major products:

  • The Taxotere® is a cornerstone of treatment for several types of cancer and is available in more than 100 countries.
  • The platinum-based agent Eloxatine® is a major treatment in colorectal cancer and is available in more than 70 countries.
